Ian Greig: Senior Mechanical Services Design Engineer
Chartered Building Services Engineer
BSc in Mechanical Engineering
Corporate Member of Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers
Ian is a graduate in Mechanical Engineering and joined RPA Ltd in 1999 having been trained in building services design at the Property Services Agency.
Ian is a highly experienced laboratory and office services designer having worked on projects for Christ's College, Girton College, Trinity College, the Perse School and Cambridge University and in particular, since 2004 at the Babraham Research Campus. He works methodically and diligently which is an essential approach in this type of work.
Ian's role at RPA Ltd is in project engineering so he is involved primarily in providing design services from project inception through to construction completion, commissioning and post handover reviews. He is a respected and valued mentor to the less experienced graduate engineers and provides an important role in checking their work for QA and training purposes.
Ian is conscientious, well motivated and is used to working to exacting deadlines. His extensive design experience allows him to develop designs quickly without compromising quality or depth of information. He is well versed in issues of coordination of services with structure and architecture and able to communicate his ideas within a design team. His extensive site experience means that he produces designs that are both technically sound and practical.
Example projects in which Ian has had a key design role are listed here.
Girton College:Ian has worked on various projects at Girton since the refurbishment of the kitchens in 2002, student accommodation in Peartrees, Hospital and Tower Wings more recently and therefore has extensive knowledge of the mechanical services throughout the college and a good working relationship with the maintenance team. He is currently working on the design or a new Pavilion for the College
Babraham Research Institute:
Building 260 (Meditrina) was constructed to high standards while being completed ahead of schedule and on budget. This houses typically 100m2 laboratories and associated admin suites for lease to fledgling biotechnology companies. The new biological support unit comprising over 3000m2 of research facilities providing Home Office regulated areas but also ACDP containment Level 2 laboratories were completed on time and on budget in July 2009 recieving high praise from Home Office inspectors and Client teams. Again RPA Ltd were an integral part of the design team from the project's inception in 2004 when feasibility studies were first commissioned. Current projects for the campus currently in progress are Buildings 580 and 930.
Christ's College - Lasdun Building:
The ziggurat format of this Grade II listed building provided a challenge for the mechanical services design. The solution incorporated autonomous heat recovery ventilation modules for individual rooms to overcome the lack of vertical connectivity. The complete internal refurbishment of 66 rooms, lecture theatre and public areas was completed in 2008.
Refurbishment of facilities in a thriving and active school campus requires careful planning and attention to detail. Working in phases to suit holiday windows RPA Ltd provided phased designs for a number of individual rooms forming the teaching facilities at the school. It was vital that design information was resolved in sufficient detail to ensure construction could be undertaken rapidly without the need for further investigation or design development. The current project for the school is the refurbishment of the Margaret Stubbs Pavilion.
