Phil joined RPA Ltd in 1992 having worked for the Peterborough Development Corporation and local and national consultancy practices.
Having chosen a practical route into engineering, Phil has a very broad experience of electrical engineering systems. He is intelligent, well read and articulate and a keen contributor to design team discussions on strategy and design philosophies.
Phil has particular knowledge of the historic building environment and managed RPA Ltd's framework agreement with English Heritage, London Region.
Phil's role as Director at RPA Ltd is principally in project engineering but he also looks at health and safety legislation and is the most senior electrical engineer in the practice. In Cambridge he has worked on many University College projects with particular experience at St John's, Murray Edwards and Jesus Colleges. Outside Cambridge he has worked on projects for Anglia Ruskin University, DNA Sequencing Laboratories for the Welcome Trust and a number of Europe-wide internet hosting cities for cable and wireless.
St John's College, Cambridge:
Having completed work on the 1930's Maufe Building, the recently Grade II listed Cripps Building with accommodation for 199 students and fellows is now undergoing its first major refurbishment since construction in the 1960s. With the College undertaking construction works in this £20m project, RPA Ltdare working closely with them to provide fully detailed co-ordination drawings. Replacement of the College's main boiler house and revisions to electrical, IT and security infrastructure are integral parts of the project. The project incorporates an extensive solar thermal installation.
Jesus College, Cambridge:
In 2005 RPA Ltdcompleted a project to incorporate en-suite facilities for all student rooms in the Grade II listed Northcourt building. The project also included the provision of new gyp and rest rooms without any visible change to the external appearance of the building. RPA Ltdalso designed the new maintenance workshops and student bar as well as an extension to the Grade I listed, thatched sports pavillion.
Murray Edwards College (New Hall):
RPA Ltdwere appointed as part of a team to re-plan and refurbish the existing College kitchens to suit current standards and legislation. The work, together with the refurbishment of the adjacent domed dining room was completed in 2003. The project was recognised by RIBA's 'Spirit of Ingenuity Heritage Award - Conservation 2003'.
Lullingstone Roman Villa:
RPA Ltdwere instrumental in the design of a new audio-visual and lighting presentation design of one of only half a dozen excavated villas in the country. The project for English Heritage was completed in 2006.
